IRS Nonprofit Hospital Study – Final Report

The media (FierceHealthcare & Modern Healthcare) are emphasizing the CEO compensation piece of this new report.

I think this is a bigger story:

Results showed not all hospitals aided their communities equally. Roughly 60% of uncompensated care was provided by 14% of hospitals, and the same share of community benefits were provided by 9% of hospitals. - Modern Healthcare

This is not just about Catholic healthcare - this report includes all types of nonprofit hospitals. I’d love to see a breakdown of this information by mission statements.

Another finding in this report is the difficulty that comes from a wide variety of community benefit reporting methods. Hopefully, this will be resolved, in part, by the new IRS 990 Schedule H.
