I had lunch with Hawa Ndilowe, the Ambassador of Malawi, today. Here’s the story: Our hospital has worked with an organization called the Children of Abraham to salvage and ship medical supplies to help meet the healthcare needs of Malawians. We supplied some medical equiptment for the cause and they provided the shipping costs. The Ambassador was in town today to visit South Bend, which has the nation’s largest community of Malawian immigrants. We held a luncheon to bring together, in gratitude, representatives of the Children of Abraham, our hospital, and area Malawians. As we gathered, we were treated to performances of the national anthems of Malawi and the United States by Malawian recording artist, Allan Ngumuya. (A video of Allan singing the Malawian national anthem (via) The South Bend Tribune.) This was a great opportunity for us to reflect on the international role of our healthcare institution, a much needed ministry.
